AirBnB New Feature Concept + Design

2024, App Team Carolina

A neighborhood guide feature for regular AirBnB users looking for area specific recs

Traveling can often include research and coordination on over 4-5 apps to make a dream vacation happen. With an app as popular as AirBnB, where users can book stays and experiences...

What if we could make trip planning a one-stop-shop experience where users could find out everything about their vacation spot without consulting another app?

The Brief

For this project, within the UX/UI Academy cohort at App Team Carolina, we were asked to design a new feature for an existing app and I chose AirBnB as a frequent user with many qualms about the lack of area/neighborhood based information that I often have to look up elsewhere.

timeframe: February-April 2024

The Context

The Objective

The Neighborhood Guide feature would allow users to find out about various neighborhoods, districts, and areas in cities so that users could make informed booking with considerations of safety reviews, things to do in the area, and restaurant guidebooks within their desired location. Rather than cross referencing results from google maps, trip advisor, and travel blogs onto AirBnB, users could find out all location-relevant information from their app.

Research

What draws and detracts users from booking a stay in a certain location?

How to make the travel planning information more accessible and safe?

What decision making steps users take to choose a place to stay while traveling?

Questions

Methods

Price, location, and safety tend to come as main priorities for users who book with Airbnb

Users tend to use secondary apps to find out about location of their stay, things to do and to book activities.

Users want more information about areas in which they are staying especially with regards to safety ratings and things to do, especially from other experienced travelers
